EDTPA® CENTRAL

What is edTPA®?

Since being used operationally in the Fall of 2013, edTPA® is aimed at ensuring the readiness of entry-level teachers on key aspects of education. edTPA® is a portfolio assessment developed by the Stanford Center for Assessments, and Learning, and Equity (SCALE) and American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), and the assessment is administered and scored by Pearson Education. The assessment allows entry-level teachers to gain exposure to teaching methods and tools before entering as certified teachers. The purpose of the edTPA® is for candidates to show and develop understanding in content knowledge and pedagogy and support varied students’ needs. Candidates need to show how theories and research are connected to students’ learning.

Overview of edTPA®

The edTPA® focuses on three areas, which include planning, instructing, and assessing. Completing the edTPA® requires candidates to create lesson plans, develop instructional materials, compile students’ sample works, develop assessment tools, record instruction, and respond to commentary prompts.

Task 1: Planning for Instruction and Assessment – Candidates are required to develop 3-5 consecutive lesson plans and develop instructional materials and assessments.

Task 2: Instructing and Engaging Students in Learning – Candidates are required to video record teaching, showing a positive environment, instructing students, and engaging students in the learning process.

Task 3: Assessing Student Learning – Candidates compile students’ sample works and provide feedback to show progress toward the objectives of the lessons.
