What is CalTPA?
 

The California Teaching Performance Assessment is a requirement for all teacher candidates seeking Preliminary teaching credentials. The CalTPA is focused on measuring aspects of the Teaching Performance Expectations (TPE), which are a set of standards that outline what beginning teachers should know and be able to do before receiving a Preliminary credential. The CalTPA includes two instructional cycles that focus on the pedagogical sequence of planning, teaching and assessing, reflecting, and applying.

Instructional Cycle 1 Learning About Students and Planning Instruction – This cycle focuses on candidates getting to know their students’ assets and needs to develop an instructional plan.

Instructional Cycle 2 Assessment-Driven Instruction – This cycle focuses on candidates developing an assessment and instructional plan over a series of 3 to 5 lessons based on what they know about their students and learning context to plan and teach a learning segment (or mini-unit), along with providing feedback to students.
